M42 Port and Polish job

    I've asked a trusted mech about PnP on the M42, he quoted me RM600 (USD150) for the job. Replacement parts not including,

    Then used MAF about RM300 (~USD 70)
    UNIChip + Tuning RM1800 (~USD400)

    It's still cheaper for me than to get a E34 M50B25 engine (going for > RM8000 or USD2000) not including labour.

    Anyway, the M42 I'm having is still relatively new ('95). and it's still pretty strong. And maintenance for the 4 potter is much cheaper here.

      The scary part is $620 gets you how much of an hp gain :?
      If its something you're analyzing from hp to $, saving for another mode of power seems logical... then again its different desires. I know what mine is , do you know yours ?? :twisted:

        First of all, I never have the intention to replace a 4 potter with a 6 potter (M20 or M50).
        And it's more of a satisfaction to see how I can unleash optimum power from a 4 potter.

        Of cos, $$$ is an important factor when it comes to mod.
        Will see how things go.
        May not opt to open up the engine just as yet.
        Maybe a MAF + piggyback first.

          When I have some $$ and mod fever bites, I'd tinker with the outside of the motor (MAF and piggyback) seeing the internals are pretty much kinda "prepped" for mods already...

          Lets see what time tells. Please keep us posted in some way if you can Fabian....

            the guys that swapped the m44s into your e30s, was it a direct swap?? my friend has one lying around, if i swapped that in id be able to get a DASC :evil:

              Hey Fabian, just with the MAF & Unichip you would gain at least 15-20rwhp....not too shabby for the money spent. Keep me updated as you get it sorted ;) Will you be comin down to JB for the Unichip??

              PS: how bout posting a pic of your E30 on the original RS's!!

                    Well not a complete "guesstimation" cause a pal has a 316i M40B16 that he stroked to 1.8L. He did a before & after dyno run when getting the Unichip and the results were around a 10rwhp gain just from the Unichip alone....it's been some time since he posted the results on BEN so I can't remember the exact figure. I got 15rwhp in my stroker just from the Unichip alone and so did 6-Piston. Furthermore, the MAF swap gave 6-Piston a 5rwhp gain.......I have yet to do my MAF swap.

                    Anyhow, it is well known that the Unichip gives totally stock engines decent gains so it would surprise me if the M42 in stock form could not obtain a 15rwhp gain with Unichip piggyback & MAF....especially since the DOHC engines appear to benefit more from the MAF swap.

                    I suppose it is all talk though until Fabian adds the two mods....hopefully he will soon!

                      ..interesting observation Chris. Lets see what the Unichip does for Fabian. When are you having your MAF put in? Keep us posted with your gains after the MAF.

                        Was hoping to do the MAF tomorrow, but I'm quite busy at work right now, so maybe Sat or next Fri. Will post the results once it's in though.

                          Not gunning that high.. 10 whp will be my base... hehe
                          I haven't dynoed my car yet, so have no idea what kind of whp power I have...

                          As for pics, IS lip sent for repair. Had a minor accident. everything else intact except for the lip, but it's still repairable. Will be making mould of it for fibreglass application...

                          Won't be going for the UNICHIP and MAF just as yet...
                          Just got 3.73 LSD from our mutual fren (the black E30 with M50)... A bit drained for now.

                            whatever you do, for the sake of all thats holy please do a before dyno so we can observe the gains. if not, you might as well not even bother posting :?

                              the UNICHIP tuner always do a before and after dyno run to show the difference, so that's not an issue ( and we're not dumb either, taking tuner's word for it ;) No offence)
