    Stuck Accelerator

    Stuck Accelerator
Tonight I went on a quick drive as I did some more work on the car, all was ok until I did a couple wot sprints and hit the clutch pedal when the throttle went wide open to the rev limiter :ohsnap:

So, I could duplicate it again and again by pressing the gas pedal all the way in, it seems like it doesn't release the pedal and it actually gets stuck in that position untill you hit the pedal again... fun.

Found a thread about this problem on e36 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...ck+accelerator) but nothing on e30.

What should I look at specifically, what should be replaced due to age etc ?

Check to make sure that your throttle body is opening and closing right, then check out the pedal and maybe the cable got "stuck" in the firewall or something...

ASAP!!! pull the intake boot off and make sure nothing got sucked in. It cost me $1k to remove the head and remove a piece of plastic that got sucked through the intake and got stuck in an intake valve.

Don't drive the car until you've checked it!!!

Check the ENTIRE length of the throttle cable for fraying (from TB the Pedal). This happened to me twice with the same symptoms. Eventually it will break.

If the cable checks out ok check your intake boot for sure.

Man, I am not looking forward to removing the intake manifold to get at the TB :(

Going to check the pedal assembly, cable and see if there is anything stuck in the intake boot first.

Well, the padel assembly appears to be ok. It looks like the cable where it connects to the tb under the hood is dry ? I move the tb by hand and it's not sticking, so maybe it's just the cable and I should order a new one...

Usually what happens is that the end of sheath on the throttle body end of the cable will pull out of the bracket a little bit and get stuck.

Did you ever find out what the problem was Jean?

Today my brother borrowed my car for a quick trip into town and when he got back he said the idle was sticking just as he had got home. I tapped the throttle a couple times and it dropped back down to where it should be.

I left to go into town and noticed once in a while the idle would sit around 1500-2000. Eventually it would return to normal so I figured it was just a ICV problem.

I was on my way home when I went WOT in 2nd gear before rolling to a stop sign. When I let off the gas and took it out of gear, the throttle stuck wide open and was bouncing off the rev limiter. I quickly started stabbing at the throttle and it returned to normal.

I would like to figure out what the problem is before I drive the car anymore. I have time tomorrow to check things out, but I am at my parents house with limited tools. Any advice on what I should check is appreciated. (I have a "budget stroker" btw)

It was the throttle cable sticking at the manifold/tb bracket. Adam was pretty much right on "Usually what happens is that the end of sheath on the throttle body end of the cable will pull out of the bracket a little bit and get stuck."

I bought a new oem cable, for my 318i it was about 20 or so iirc.
