Engine locked up, possibly still rebuild?

I had an engine that locked up. It had a new oil pump that just decided it didnt want to pick up oil that day. So... it ran for about 5 minutes, turned it off and waited a while... ran again for 5 minutes later and then sat for a longer time... then ran for 5 minutes again and thats when it locked up. I am gonna take the head off and maybe tear the whole thing down. I have never taken an m20 apart before but if at all possible I would really like to rebuild this engine myself as a project. Should I take it apart down to bare block and take it to a machine shop and see what they say about bearing surfaces and what not? Or should it be obvious if the block/head cant be reused because of the bearing surfaces in the block/head? What should I look for to know if its reusable or not?

Ive torn apart an oil starved m20. Prepare to machine the crank to fix it which i hear is unadvised. Its not pretty when you start taking rod caps off. The block may still be useable. Might get lucky and just have to get a crank, rod, main bearings, oil pump and spin balance.

i will ask the obvious question... why not bore it and stroke it?

What he said, i wouldn't risk a crank that's seen abuse like that, buy atleast a good used one (one that measures well within spec) and bore it incase the cylinder walls were damaged. Trust me, i've seen what can happen when this isn't done, you're begging for a spun bearing and alot of burnt oil/bad compression if you don't do what i suggested.

Machining the crank is unadvised because you must run thicker bearings which are softer and wear faster.

just buy a new engine, it would be cheaper and easier. I say S50 or S52 :)
