    Noob window question

    So, I've got an 87is...

the pass window needs a new motor and my drivers side is starting to go too...

so does anyone have a write up on how to replace the motors, or is not even hard enough to merit a write up?

    I appriciate the help.

Sure it needs motors? Have you tried switches? Motor failures are rare on that car, but switches croak all the time. It's easy to figure out once you have to door panel off either way.

Damien, odd that you post this. I am having to do a regulator in my '87is too.

I have done several now, but only early cars.

Here is a tip I will offer: get a pair of "panel poppers". These look like a screwdriver handle on a small prybar. Immeasurable help in getting things apart, especially the trim strips across the top of the door, AKA "Window Scrapers"

Assuming you have already pulled the door panel, both inner and outer window scrapers, you can unbolt the window from the carriers.

Jockey the window around and remove it.

Unbolt the regulator from the door. Remove any electricals from the regulator assembly (as in unplug the motor)You are now ready to remove the carrier. You may have to remove the door latch (aka door pull) to get room to manuver the regulator out.

To best jockey the regulator around, you will need to push one of the "humps" up through the window opening in the top of the door. You will see how removing those scrapers is necessary, because the mounts for the regulator need to come out of that same opening!

The big hole in the lower rear corner of the dor is where you are gonna shove that regulator out and back in.

This entire process is far easier than it sounds. I can do one in about 15 minuites.

      Hope this helped.

      So everthing is now unbolted

i'm not positive, but i'm almost like 60% sure. I'm gonna try to snag some switches in the next week and try them...and if that doesn't work try to diagnos it from there,

I was just trying to see what kind of mess a motor replacement was going to entail.

        thanks guys.

you can't put late model regulators in an early model (the switch was sometime in 88).

And you don't have to replace the whole regulator, you can replace just the motor which keeps you from having to remove the glass or anything else except for two bolts.

I've done my motor three times and the regulator once. It's stupid how much the early motors/tracks suck.

Is it possible to take out the window motor without removing the regulator?

Yes, there is two allen screws that you can access to just pull the motor out. Very easy job, pull the door panel and peel back the plastic and have a look at the motor. You'll see them. Don't strip them out like I did the first time, it sucks drilling them.

Fuck, I was at the salvage yard last weekend trying to untorque the phillips head screws that were on the back side of the motor. I thought those were what held the motor to the reg/track. I will give that a go next weekend.

Just switch your switches. If you pass window works with the driver's side switch, you've found you problem.

back from the dead by another noob!

Don't want to start a second noob thread, ya know?

the rear driver's side window on my four door e30 is loopy. It only works when I open the door and push the down button there. It will not go down if the door is closed.

                      2 Questions here...

                      1. Anyone had this problem before?
                      2. How do I go about getting the door panels off? where are the key places I need to tug at?
