    Emissions Failed

    Hey,

I have an 1989 325iX. I failed the emissions in Rhode Island. Both hydrocarbons and CO failed at idle and at 2500RPM. My mechanic said that I should just do a cat and a o2 sensor and it should pass. I have a slight exhaust leak where the manifold meets the head.

I am looking at cat's online and not sure which one fits my car exactly. There are mainly two options. One for around $350.00 and another for $500.00 +. Look at the link below for example.

I know it's tough to tell but should purchasing a new cat and a o2 sensor help me pass?

    Thanks,

    -Erik

That should have some effect, but if your stock cat and o2 sensor are good, then you might still fail even with the replacement parts because something else is wrong. How long were you driving for? Should do a nice hour long drive on the highway to get the cat nice and hot.

I drove the car about 15 minutes before I took it in, then it sat for about an hour before they were able to take it in. Ill try to take a long drive when I bring it back in.

Do a fresh oil change too. Often this will help HC issues.

Thats your problem right there. Your cat was not hot enough at all.

I had the same problem wit mine here in Canada.

I would change your plugs as the newer they are the easier it is to pass. If you have HC and CO problems it is probably a oil burning problem. If any of your plugs are oil fowled this would probably be why you are failing.

Then rev her really high on the freeway to get rid of all the junk in the combustion chamber and get it tested.

            I hate SMOG time.

My car failed hydrocarbons at idle.

If you have to wait for your test try to keep your revs up. That was the advice given to me by the shop that replaced my dead O2 sensor.

I passed the second time no problem.

              Good luck!
