    Rusted Exhaust: help

Well I didn't get any responces today in the correct section so I'm going to try this. I kinda need the car by monday!

So the other day my exhaust started to dragg on the highway. There is a crack in the pipe between the CAT and the resonater. The resonatoer was just hanging there tilted to one side dragging.

So I went to the shop and aparently the whole exhaust is rusted. Everything. The muffler is good but thats about it. There was nothing for them to weld to for new pipes.

So right now the only thing connected is from the CAT back and nothing can be welded to the cat. Would I be able to have a shop make me something? Or do i need to find a new exhaust from the cat back and then have a shop weld me some pipes to connect to the muffler?

Would it be easy to convert to the 325i exhaust? How much should I be paying for everything, I dont want to get riped off!

    thanks in advance

Find a shop that is willing to chop off the cat and replace it with straight pipes. That's what I did.

The shop that I went to said everything after the cat is rusted out too and it would be hard to have a shop fab something up that connects to the manafolds.

straight pipes would be loud and annoying. Anyone have a non rusted exhaust??

Shops around here can put any exhaust set up on that you want (meaning no cats), that is aslong as you take the cats off yourself and they didn't, that way they don't get a fine if someone rats on them. And as for it being loud get a turbo muffler, they muffle the sound good.

We had to put a new exhaust on my bro's eta and it was really cheap from autozone.

Any good shop should be able to custom weld you an exhaust for a few hundred. If the muffler is still good, just have them weld new pipes from the manifold back to the muffler and install all new hangers.

wouldn't it be pretty loud without the cat though?

Rusted Exhaust:How to save the cat...

The outflow of cat has 2 two bolt flanges that hold muffler assy on. One just slides on over the pipe and the other is held on by a bell flare in the cat outlet pipe. Over time the bolts will rust to flanges and break off and bolts cant be removed from flanges unless heated cherry red w/oxy-act torch. Sometimes the bolts wont come out and flange must be hacksawed or torched off. So you need 2 of # 22 in link plus new muffler assy with hardware kit. One of these will be hacksawed thru on one side and spread open to slip over pipe on belled outlet pipe on cat then closed back up- when bolts and nuts are tightened everything will clamp together.

all depends on what type of muffler you put on it. Also where do you live, cause without a cat it will not pass inspection. Unless you know the guy really good were you get your car inspected.
