Chips are a plug-and-play item. You remove the computer, open it up, remove the factory chip and install the new one. No soldering required, at least as far as I know on E30s. I've only done a few though.
As far as chips are concerned, I'd HIGHLY recommend you stick to Jim Conforti/TMS for your chip.
