    Gas Tank Overfill?

Whenever I fill it until the "click", gas drips out from where the gastank is. There's also a strong smell of gas for the first... 50km or so of driving after I park, any ideas as to what it is and how much it'll cost? It's not like a waterfall, but it's a steady drip right after filling it up.

sounds like you have my problem. I have linked it to one of two problems. It is either that the fuel pump gasket needs to be replaced or their is a rust hole in the downspout to your tank. If yours is similar to mine we should link up one day and help each other fix.

Yeah man, I might end up taking the car to the shop in the next week or two, so I might have him check it out while he's under there. I'll let you know what he comes up with.

its a leak. my beater has the same problem....its the lines on top of the tank that are rusted out and leaking, well thats where it was leaking for me...though i hear the leaks are somewhat common.

Leaks are common here. This was the source of mine.

The seal where the fuel sender/ pump goes through the top of the tank can leak. All you have to do is pull the rear seat out to check it. My sister's car did that, but only when the tank was full. A new gasket fixed it.

                  Overfill

There is a steel "Y" pipe that is rusted out above the wheel well behind the overfill container. When you fill the tank the overfill is supposed to go into the small plastic tank and be sent to the gas tank but since the "Y" connector is rusted out it ends up on the ground behind your wheel. My e30 had this problem until I replaced the "Y" connector.

it could be ther rubber hose that connects the fuel filler with the top of the fuel tank. check that out first, then look for more serious problems..

yeah mine was doing this, leaking from rite where the hard lines on the tank end, and the rubber lines connect. its a PITA to change, but lucky for me just changing the rubber line that goes to the filter got rid of the leak.

Fuel line is cheap, run to local auto store, get correct size Fuel-injection hose (5/16 I think? but look at your old hose). Usually runs like $3-$5 a foot.

Make sure you say fuel-injection hose - high pressure - otherwise they'll cut you off just fuel hose, which is NOT high pressure....ask me how I know. lol

I have the exact same problem (first 50 km's), I am going to pull the rear seat next time I fill up to check.
