Is it in a running car? that would be nice to drive the car before hand. That's the only advice I have.

I've never used one, but I though there was "lead down" testers that you punp compressed air into the closed cylinder and then measure the time it takes for the compressed air to leak out.

Besides from that, it could have a cracked head, burnt turbo, ect...Good news is 132K in nothing on a m30 motor.

I would only buy it knowing that you might have to rebuild the head/turbo. The bottem end will be fine.

    Pricewise it's a fair deal, I paid $800 shipped for my 90k M30.

I wouldnt expect it to have a messed up head, BMW updated the M30 head in '83 to help with the cracking issues. $900 is a good deal for a complete motor with electronics and everything.

Expect almost $300 for e30.de mounts, money for the exhaust, hoist rental, at least $150 for misc supplies and fluids... You might have to figure out how to get a driveshaft that fits either by using one from another Bimmer or having one shortened.

Getting it physically in the car is not a huge challenge. Getting the car driveable takes a long time as anyone who has done an M30 / M50 / S50 / S38 swap can tell you. Its all in the god damn details....
