    CV Boot Replacement.... help!

So i just got the boots in the mail. both inner and outers in one of my half shafts need to be replaced. I took advantage of the moment and changed to a 4.10lsd. Now, the Axle is already out and i'm looking at it clueless on what to do.

Can someone please explain what to do and then i'll take some pics of the process and make a diy thread out of it since i can't find one. Help appreciated thanks.

I'm thinking that the inner end of the halfshaft has a cap that can be removed but i dont want to mess anything up.

Yes the inner end has a cap that is to be removed. And I think it's pretty self explanatory from there. The outer obviously has to go on first then the inner.

well. its done. i've never made such a grimy mess in my live. I have some pics of the process but i feel as though its not neccesary since it was pretty straight forward.

for the sake of having info available:
cv boot replacement replacing cv boots

*note: keep dirt out of cv joint. do not let axles hang from car or joints bend too much you wont be able to piece it back together. Have plenty of paper towels at hand. It can get messy.

      1. Remove half shaft

      2. Remove inner caps. I used a hammer and a screw driver tappin nicely all around the cap so to not cause any dammage. They should come off pretty esasily.

      3. Remove Retiner Clip: There's a tool for this and it costs about $7 so go buy it. A small curved needle nose plier will also work. This is what the clip looks like:

      4. Slide out the Joint. The joint moves around so be carefull not to mess it up in the process. Place joint somewhere where its not going to get diry.

at this point you'll see what the paper towels are for.

      5. Remove inner-Outer boot cap. Unclip the smaller ends of both boots and slide them out. Slide on the new ones and re-clip the smaller ends.

      6. Doing one boot at a time. Use as much of the grease provided as you can. Place about 1/3 of the grease (ONLY USE CV GREASE) on the joints and the rest inside the boot that will act as a resevoir. Then, making sure that the holes for the bolts are properly aligned, re-tap the caps onto the axle and you're basically done.

      7. Bolt axle back up, be nice to the joint as the new grease makes its way around.

would i be wrong in thinking it's a fairly simple task to swap in a whole new cv axle? rather than just the joints?

That is easier, but more expencive. How much are the new boots?

i dunno, my boots are fine though, i already have the axle. told me like 105 for then inner joint, and that they can't get the outer sperately(another place told me same thing) 285 for the whole axle, so i just got the whole axle, if it's not broken now, it will be at some point, might as well have it done now

id just pay someone 50 bucks like i do to do the work swap them in and back out. Well worth the time saved. I belive that and rear wheel bearings is the only thing that e30's should go to the shop for as far as mantinece . And wow spell check.
