    Fuel sender/pump ?

Did the early e30 not come with a fuel level sender on the driver side ? I pulled the carpet on the rear driver side and there is nothing there, only passenger side has a cover.

My fuel gauge reads half a tank but the low fuel light is ON. My car does not have a sender on the driver side, it's only got a pump and a sender on the passenger side. There are two electrical connections here, one is a 3 pin and one is a two pin. The 3 pin in my case is obviously going to the fuel gauge, shorting the brown+browngreen pegs the fuel gauge.

I am thinking the brown silver is the actual low fuel light wire. I put a DMM on the two pin connector and when you crank the car it reads 12 volts so it's got to be a fuel pump power.

I went ahead and drained the fuel (5mm hex bolt on the passenger side of the car) from my gas tank today and it only had 1/2 gallon of fuel that came out the passenger side. I guess in my case the low fuel light is reading correctly but the fuel level sender in the pump unit isn't correct

So, on the early e30s is the pump and a sender one unit ?

yeah, deffinetly a fuel sender problem. I had that a while ago, fun stuff. I believe the early e30s have the sending unit on the drivers side but it is in the engine compartment instead of the rear of the car.

Yes, and it is installed on the right (passenger in NA) side.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

But the level sender can still be removed and replaced as it's own component away from the pump right ?

Correct. There are 4 8mm nuts and washers under the nuts and the sender comes right out. When you pull it out gas will piss out a little hole in the bottom. Very simple to do.

Thank you! Is the level sender here the same as one on the newer e30s on the driver side or is this a different unit that only works on the early e30s ?

I think you'd need the sender for that particular car. The system on later E30's is different.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I would get one made for your year car as well.

Jean, can you do me a favor? Can you take a picture of where the two plastic lines go at the pump area? The two plastic lines go into rubber lines. One plastic line is fatter than the other.

                Thanks.

I actually had a picture already for my own reference , not sure if this is what you were looking for. I am going to remove the sender unit tomorrow and see what's up ..
