Newb with a request for assist

Hello all, first off, great site, LOTS of info here. I have been perusing the site for general info on the 1989 325i that I traded my '89 Chevy S10 4X4 straight across for :D.

The info I need is on a problem that has reared its ugly head 3 times since I have had the car, approx 2 weeks. Beginning, the engine had a prob starting, would take a lot of cranking at first, that has since stopped, but when cold starting, the car will rough idle, and I usually have to hold the throttle down at 2K rpm for a minute or two to get the car to idle correctly. I live in the PDX area and we have had some cold weather as of late.

Once started, the car runs usually really well, good acceleration, pretty good mileage, but 3 times I have had the bad incidents, I have been accelerating in 4th (1 time) and 5th (2 times) and heard a bang from the rear end, almost like hitting ice, losing traction for a split second, and then immediately gaining traction again.

I thought that the ice was the case the first two times which happened about a week apart, but the third time happened almost immediately after the second time, and when the third time happened, the engine shut down, but then immediately started a second later (had not enough time in the shock to disengage the clutch) with the car still in gear. Tach dropped to zero, but then went right back up to correct rpm.

I read some of the posts about the fuel system, and am going out to check the rubber hoses, ICV, CPS, fuel pump, and the FPR line. Anyone else have any ideas, I would appreciate the help. This car is great, especially coming from a 2 dr S10, and I would like to keep it that way. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to chatting with you all in the future.

Rough idle is most assuredly from a vaccuum leak. Check and/or replace intake boot and all vac lines and you'll mostl likely solve the problem. As for "banging" from the rear end...........hmmm.........

I appreciate the input. I have been out there looking for a vacuum leak, and have yet to find anything. I also looked at the bushing in the back end, and everything there looks fine. I did notice that the idle set screw was about an 1/8th of an inch from the plate, so I adjusted that out to at least make contact plus a little, and the idle seemed to straighten out a little.

I am at a loss at this point, but will continue to keep looking, next is the fuel pressure regulator, but being here by myself, it will be hard to keep that from spraying fuel while turning the key. Again, thank you.
