    Installing a Chip

I have the Pelican instructions on how to do it and everything went fine until i took off the cover and only see one board when the instruction say that I need to take the top one off to get to the bottom one. There is no second board. I feel like I see the chip already but i'm too afraid to pull it out. The brown thing with the silver sticker on top I assume is the chip. Should I just pull it out and put the new chip in or am I missing something. I've searched endlessly. Please help.

Don't you have a chip to replace it with? Replace the two that look the most alike?

I sort of don't remember watching/helping my dad change mine, but I think its the bottom-most chip in this picture. Feel free to correct me otherwise

Or its the same-shaped one on the left....shit, can't remember. sorry

the brown one had the "cover" on it that the instructions say to take off and it looks like the one you're talking about is soldered into the board, where as the other one is not.

if you have a 173ECU there is no top circuit board theres only one. If you have a 153 there is 2 and you have to take the top one off to get to the bottom one.

You board looks like a 173. The chip is the one with the sticker on it towards the bottom of the pic. You pull the chip like a BIOS chip in a computer. You can use a flat blade screw driver (better to go to Radio Shack and get a BIOS chip puller, they are about the same size), just start on one end, slide the screw driver under the chip easily, and start rotating the blade ever so softly until one end comes up slightly. Move to the other end and repeat the process.

Continue to do this on each end until the chip comes out of the board. Your new chip should have some lettering on one end of the board, make sure you align the new chip the same way as the original. Also, there is a little groove on the opposite end of the chip slot on the board from the lettering side.

Make sure your new chip's clips are lined up with the holes, you may have to push a little on one side of the chip, just start pressing the chip down until it seats completely. Be careful not to bend the pins.

          Hope this helps out.
