    Engine clatter/rattle and clutch noises

    hi everyone,

my car has this rattle or clattering sound when the throttle is about 1/3rd compressed. if i let off, the noise goes away, or if i compress over 1/3rd, say 2/3rds or WOT, the rattle goes away. it sounds as if it is coming from the front, and it is more of a rattle/clatter as opposed to a vibration - say from a worn flex disk. any ideas as to what this might be? this is on an M20.

second, when i have the clutch pushed in all the way, hear and feel a whirring or grinding noise. as soon as i let off the clutch it goes away, but if i have even a little pressure on the it, i feel and hear the grinding. the car is still driveable in all gears and seems to shift alright. any input on this or the above issues would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA

i had just about the same problem as you. though it was my belts. i replaced them and the rattle/slight whine went away. if the noise gets worse everyday i would def check out your belts.

Adjust your valves! I have a strange noise in my E28 that is caused by the fuel pulsation damper... I have two, and one is at the RF corner of the car in the "fuel cooling" circuit. Annoying as hell, I think I'm going to eliminate that circuit all together.

thanks guys, i'll check all of those out this weekend.

for the people who experienced the rattling: did it only occur at certain rpms/throttle positions? i'll probably adjust the valves anyway, and i will have a look at/replace the belts.

TOB, darn, so i need to open up the transmission...i'll probably end up doing clutch as well, since it's already opened up...$$$ :(

            Thanks again.

You don't need to "open up" your transmission to change the TOB. It just need to be removed to gain access to it. Change out the clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and have the flywheel resurfaced while your at it. Use new flywheel/pressure plate bolts and don't forget to install the fucking spacer ring on the flywheel. Ask me how I know.

yeah sorry that's what i meant. didn't mean complete tear down. appreciate the advice and will probably do all of the above.

ahah, the spacer ring sounds like a very unfortunate incident.
