searching for someone in so. cal to install ssk

Hello guys. I was wondering if someone knew of any good people or mechanics here in so. cal that could install my short shift kit. I brought it to my mechanic and he said he would have to remove the muffler and i have been told that is not neccessary. I just want to bring my car somewhere else.

    any help would be great!

i dont recommend taking it to a mechanic, you can do it yourself in less than an hour.

Please do it yourself. It took me 30mins tops. Download the article on UUC's website and follow the steps. These instructions apply to all SSKs.

BTW- The exhaust does not have to be removed.

Install it yourself, and go back and tell that mechanic he's a fucking idiot.

Sounds like the guy that told Jordan and I we couldn't swap a new tranny into my car, because "BMW transmissions are too complicated". So we didn't. We pulled the old tranny AND the motor and swapped in new ones. In just under 3 days.

It depends on what lever you have and how much shorter the throw is. Certain levers require removal of the harmonic balancer on the tranny-driveshaft connection, exhaust and heat sheilding need to be removed in that case
on that topic, my lever is 1-2mm away from my driveshaft :( If i hit the lever with a lot of force on top, it makes a nice 'tink' noise against the driveshaft... custom linkage goes in soon enough though to fix that :D

I work for a shop in So Cal and I'll still recommend that you try it yourself.

If you really dont want to, there's me in the LA area, and Apex in the SD area.

if the harmonic balancer's in the way, you just have to remove the entire shift selector rod and bend it slightly using 3 sockets and a vice. that'll allow you enough clearance.

30 min if u know exactly what you're doing, else it'll take about 1-2 hrs tops for a first timer feeling around for all the clips and stuff to remove.

Take a look at the UUC walkthru, VERY helpful.

If you can change your oil, you can change your shift lever and the few bearings down there.

Doing the other bearings and parts of the linkage will be MUCH more challenging with exhaust and drivtrain in the way, but for your needs, you probably don't need to drop the exhaust or drivetrain. Having a second person in the car while you're below helps a lot too.
