    Horrible clunking under acceleration by rear passenger side.

    When accelerating fast in low gears, (most torque to tires.)
    mostly in 2nd/3rd gears around 3500rpm , wether im accelerating hard or easy and steady..

    i get a very bad vibration, it feels like a high speed flat tire, or running over constant railroad tracks..

    it seems isolated at the rear passenger side.. either that side of the diff, or the axle,

    what could cause this?

    Not sure but my guess is the Guibo or CSB.

      rear shock mount? wheel bearing? wheel out of balance? or the drive shaft couplers named above?

      First guess would be the RSM, if it's old you might as well replace them anyways, very common failure on e30's. Search for the e46 cabrio retrofit, or get a set from jtd, ireland, akg, ground control.

          +1 on the flex disc and/or the ds carrier bearing.

          Could also be a wheel bearing as well.

            its not the guibo or csb.

            it could be a bearing, i also get a weird squeel/ whine at low speeds. it souds bad.

            but its a very rotationally fucked up type of vibration, i dont think it could be the RSMs but they are getting replaced soon, with the rest of the suspension.


            my guess is its either the diff, the axle/ cv joint, or the wheel bearing..

            what do you think?

              Driveshaft or csb does not feel just like the rear is messed up. I had the csb go out in my 6 series and the driveshaft whacked the floor hard enough to dent it, but it in no way felt like a flat tire.

              I'd be very suspicious of the rear shock mount or possibly even the diff mount.

              Could be a cv joint, but I'd check the other things first. CV joints usually just vibrate and get noisy, but the vibration doesn't feel like a flat tire...

                Jack the appropriate side up.
                Make sure it's not going to fall!
                Grab both sides of the tire.
                Try to shake it off (checking for play) with lug bolts on.
                Repeat with hands on top and bottom of tire.

                More than even a little play? Bearing.

                  ill do that to the bearing.. see if it is the culprit.

                  is there any way to check the cv axles? what are they like when they go bad.?

                    sorry to revive this. but im pretty sure it was my driveshaft stuff, either guibo, csb, or the u-joints in the shaft itself.

                    either way, it led to a shredded guibo and that was my main problem.
