    M42 loud clicking...

I was driving the car around for one week then car started vibrate and click very loud so I checked the oil and it needed to be changed bad. I changed the oil and used a 4cyl oil treatment and fuel injector cleaner, the motor sounds good but I still hear the loud clicking when I start it and when the car is fully warmed up like after a short drive the engine sounds like crap but it idles fine. Im thinking it could be a lifter that is broken? or my injectors are going bad...help me out here guys.

My mechanic thinks that it coul be one of my lifters becuase I used and engine flush on it and maybe some kind of carbon deposit or something broke loose and is making it sound like that.

How many miles are on your engine? If the mileage is high, the timing case will begin to get very noisy. Also, the oil pan bolts have a tendency to fall out into the lower pan and partially block the oil pickup, starving the engine of oil, especially at startup. How long does it take for your oil light to go out? Does it happen immediately, or does it take a few seconds before it goes out?

I'd go to m42club.com. There is more expertise on the M42 engine and its potential clackety startup sounds there.

Mine has been ticking like that for the last 6 months. My oil pan gaskets have been changed so it's not loose bolts. A lot of guys with the 318is have the ticking noise it seems.

its your lifters if its like that when cold.

have you changed your timing chain tensioner? if you have, your guides may be worn to shit!

The motor has 22xxxx miles on it but i have religiously taken care of it since the first time i did an oil change on the car the motor passes smog and consumes oil in a normal rate. Maybe the car is just acting up its done this several times before but everytime i checked it out or have it check nothings wrong. well i drained a little oil from the pan and pulled the valve cover off and poured it all over the timing chain and cams and stuff there and the noise went away i checked the chain tensioner and it was fine the sound is gone now...wierd...

Your oil pressure could be low, maybe a worn bearing or a worn oil pump ?

Could be valve chatter as well.

My guess would be the timing chain tensioner (prob not), more likely a faulty oil pump. I have a 83' diesel benz with a bad oil pump (wasn't getting oil to the top of the head) it was sure making some sweet noises.
