Bingo. Moisture is still coating the upper end, so cleaning the oilcap and then checking in a few days only makes you worry, as the moisture migrates back, making you think you blew your headgasket. Go for a loooong highway cruising drive, and if it looks marginally better, it's all good. Do a few long drives, or even idle in the driveway for a while, then leave the oilcap off to vent steam, do this like 4-5 days in a row. ALWAYS PUT THE CAP BACK ON BEFORE LOWERING THE HOOD. or lower it, but don't lock it down unless the cap is back on the cover.
Winter condensation on the head, and short city trips FTL.
I actually convinced a guy the HG was blown on a private sale GTI when I was younger knowing this info, and scored a '86 GTI for $1200 in '90 as a senior in high school. Drove it like a demon, and crashed it a few times before totalling the body and putting the engine in 2 more bodies. I killed a lot of VW's as a kid, and learned how to wrench as I couldn't afford to pay the kind of damage I created. I had a lot of fun as a kid, and regret nothing.
