    Tranny Fluid Verification

I searched around and gathered the following information. It was a bit scattered, so could somebody just confirm for me?

    90 325is, Getrag 260:

    Internal hex drain bolt:

    -Use Redline MTL
    -automatically has no label

    External Hex drain bolt:

-If it has a Green Label, MT90
-If it has a red label, ATF

    Tranny Capacity:

-1.7 quarts, so buy 2. 3 if you're feeling chipper and want to buy an extra.

If you have an internal drain plug and assume nobody swapped the plug, buy 2 quarts MTL to fill it, right? ALso, does anybody know the actual physical internal differences between the 260's that would warrant the use of one fluid over another? Is it honestly detrimental to use MTL versus ATF, assuming the tranny has been thoroughly drained first?

Where did you get that information? All of the Getrag 260s I've dealt with were filled with MTL and had no labels on it. Also, all of mine have used a 17mm allen bolt for the drain/fill plugs.

Was it a production date thing? Why would they make two of the same transmissions, and fill them with different fluids?

      Erik-

I was referencing these threads specifically:

I have the same questions as you...why would they make the same tranny with different fluids?

Well, according to the links you provided, it appears that you made a mistake in your first post. In both links, people have stated that the qreen stickered trannys require MT90, not 75w90.
75w90 is mainly used for limited slip differentials.

If your tranny has a sticker on it, try to clean it off and see what it says.

Alright, I edited my first post so as to not misinform anybody.

My tranny doesn't have a sticker. I was sort of trying to deduce whether it could have come off...I think I'm just going to go for MTL.

The nominal fluid capacity of the Getrag 260 is 1.25L or about 1.32qt.
Mine took about 1.5qts to slightly overflowing the fill hole.
Either way 2 quarts will fill, with enough left over that you'll only need 1 qt for the next change.

You can blend some MT90 with the MTL to quiet the Getrag Rattle. I used a little over 1qt of MTL (My previous fill involve some spillage, so I only had about 0.2 qt in the partial bottle of MTL), then topped off with MT90.
