    Exhaust banging on something...

Just picked up the e30 today. When we arrive the seller explains that he felt bad selling us a car that was in such unknown condition so between last Sunday and today he has changed the timing belt, replaced the o2 sensor, water pump & addressed an issue relating to the fuel pump. To fix the fuel thing he dropped the tank.

All of this is nice however there is now a rattle in the exhaust that sounds around the rear section of the driveshaft or rear subframeish. Is this easy to fix or is the exhaust pretty straight forward? I'm used to 2002 exhausts which are 3-part pretty much open pipes. Is there a typical place where they hit or bang? It's louder inside the car than outside.

    Thanks for any advice.

Could be a loose heatshield. There is a heatshield that goes over the exhaust right under the tank.

how hard are these things to take apart or maybe just tweak a little? I live in an apartment downtown in Boston. I don't have any jackstands or lift. Can this be fixed or messed with by just climbing under (ST Lowered Springs) the car and trying to fix it or should I drive to a place where I can put it up and get under the car?

Mike I don't suppose you have a lift in your garage I could borrow do you?

You should jack the car up. Even at stock heighth I think it would be annoying to mess with.

Is it just a few simple bolts (like twice the 2002) or are we talking a major undertaking to mess with whatever it is under there? The realoem (HTK) shots look like there's only two sections of exhaust am I right?

only 2 sections yes. But there isnt much room under the car. And if the heatshield is just loose, the bolts are on either side of the exhaust. No need to drop it down. Also could be a broken/worn out exhaust hanger. There is one rubber one right by the subframe in the rear, and 2 that hold the muffler on in the back.

PO took the fuel tank out yesterday (yes the whole tank). I assume that since the plans were for me to pick up the car last night he was rushed & either forgot something or maybe something didn't go on perfect. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that he didn't forget a few hangars under there.
