choking at high speeds? any idea?

around 55+ car starts to choke, kind of feels like as if the exhaust was backfiring but i would actually feel it choking. any idea what it could possibly be? i was told that it might have been my m20 airflow meter, but i swapped it with an m30 afm and it still ran the same way, choking. acceleration wasnt smooth. plain ol cough cough. lol anyways let me know what you guy think or suggest i do. thanks!

mine started choking at about 80, after that it just gave up trying to go any faster. if you pushed it harder, it would just sputter and die. i had an unbelievable amount of sediment, rust, and general shit in my gas tank so i replaced that and the in-tank pump and that solved my problem.

          change your fuel filter!

its easy, cheap, and if you've never done it, do it. that may just fix your problem

also, if your smelling gas from the rear driver side wheel well, that is exactly where your fuel filter is

the choking problem is most likely a fuel filter clogged with shit!

          CHANGE IT!

fuel filter or intank fuel pump? On the early 323i the filter is under the hood. intank fuel pump is under seat?
