in florida, dont really have time to search or anything

i drove my e30 down to florida from massachusetts and its running strong, but i wanted to check the level of fluid in my transmission, i dont have my bentley with me and i havent really checked it before, but where do you look to check the fluid level and also, to add fluid what kind do i need to add, i dont really know what color sticker is on my tranny, as i know that it matters, but i was just wondering if someone knew what kind of fluid to put into it (if it is in fact low) based on its year n shit. its a 1991 318i, 5 sp manual transmission, i would like to check it before i head back up to mass
    1991 318is --- currently not road worthy
    1991 318i ---- 308K - retired

The only way to check the level on that transmission is to get the car up in the air level (lift or four jack stands) and remove the fill plug. Fluid level should be even with the bottom edge of the hole.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

And the fill plug is about halfway up the side of the trans on the passenger side. It will be either a 17mm inner or outer bolt.
