tranny specifics :: differences between e and i

ok, so etk says all 5 speeds for the e30s are the 260/5 getrags ... howerver all the part nubmers are different for each model.

anyone able to shed light on this? i assume there are differences, just checking.

shifter mounts are different, some use a rear balancer, and some have different guibos.

Some are also not meant to be used with single vs. dual mass flywheels. This is not necessarily fact, but I've heard and read many instances where people have had difficulties converting from one to the other. The earliest eta's also came with a tranny which could be unbolted from the bell housing, which was somewhat unique. These were originally used on the 1982+ 5series e28's but were also used on some of the earlier e30's since the eta motors are essentially the same.

ok.. the e tranny we have had a driveshaft balancer, it was a bitch to get it off :). it's from an 85 325e. i'm assuming that didn't have the dual mass flywheel. in any event, we'll surely want the single, so i'm hoping that's the case. as far as the shifter mount, since the tranny is going back in the car it came from, i'm not worried about that. except that we'll need to get a new balancer cuz the old one is most definately out of commision.

so we'll use the i clutch, etc... and now we're doing a basic straight ahead e to i swap. correct?

i was worried about the internals... etc..

Hey Jay there is a cheap 86 325es in Newton that's rough for sale. I imagine it could be had for under $500 for parts. I can get the amount if you are interested or need another parts car.

the E transmission has crank refrence sensors and the I does not have the pre-marked holes drilled out. Internally they are the same transmission.

My 88 325 had a dual mass flywheel, and when we put in the i motor and tranny, it only had a single mass. I'm thinking the dual mass were only used on 325e's?

isn't the tranny a different length physically, the eta has a bit longer selector (and the other) shaft

Nope, the output shafts ( the part that the guibo and front drive shaft mount to ) changed throughout the years but they are interchangeable with a 30mm deep thin walled socket. the transmission dimensions are exaclty the same.

                        awesome guys thanks.

modifiede30: i'll let you know if it's something my buddy's interested in. i think we'll just use the one we have tho. sounds like in the end it will work.

i suppose i could just look at the plethora of websites documenting the e to i swap... heheh.. /me steps on his own foot.

                        anyway, thanks.
