steering assembly

got a question about the front end suspension/steering, when i go over bumps in the road i can hear this hollowish metal clunking sound, and i thought maybe tie rods or ball joints, however i had my car jacked up the other day, and there is this joint in the steering column i noticed and i happen to hit it and i think the noise is coming from that, i grabbed on and shook it and it moved like a bastard, side to side and what not, shouldnt that be stationary, so i was thinkin that was causing the noise, and maybe that rubber piece that connects the two parts of that steering rod, i dunno the real names for this stuff, but i can get a picture to be more clear if needed.

That would cause that noise. You should get that replaced asap.

you mean that rubber place would cause the noise, or what else of what i described would? what are the exact part names so i know what im asking or searching for? thanks a ton

I think the U-joint it's self would cause your problem. The rubber being bad would not help the situation tho.

awesome thanks man, how would i figure out for sure if its that swivel joint, i mean i can grab the part listed as part#1 and it shakes so im assuming its the swivel joint,

and also i dunno about the price tho, im wicked poor, so maybe ill go find a lower mileage one at the junkyard and try that, if it works ill keep it till i hear the noise again, if not then ill get a new one.

That is a good idea. Try and find a used one.
