    What is the correct idle?

So I was at 1800. Got it down to ~1100 but I want it down to around 600-800 I think

Gotta check my plugs and wires this weekend. Then I don't really know where else to check :(

icv screw that keep the plate open. and you can also adjust the idle by the screw inside your afm.

Idle control valve can be sticking - clean it with brake fluid

green box could be out - get the green box from your glovebox and check its currents?

      throttle body set screw?

      TPS?

      same issue i had...

      idle should be between 650-750...

An 89 doesn't have a separate Idle Control Module. The ICV is operated directly by the DME. A fast idle could be from a stuck or failed ICV, but if the throttle stop and TPS are misadjusted the ICV may not ever be used. The adjustment procedure for the throttle stop and TPS is in the Bentley.

The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Simply cleaning the ICV greatly increases your chances of getting that good idle, but I did that on my 325e and it's still fucked up.

Carb or brake cleaner... doesnt matter.

make sure its off the car when you do it though.

Temp sensors on the tstat housing can cause your idle to be to high also. Mine had some crusty gunk in it, cleaned out the housing and my idle works fine now. 1500 cold, 700 warm.

i was under the impression it was one or the other.

One of them eats up the stuff inside and then it does not have the resistance it needs.

just went around the world chassing my idle on an 88 325is so here is my take.

if the idle is constant and not looping up and down, I am assuming this is on a warm engine:

                      1) ck throtle cable allows the intake to return to idle ei closed manifold
                      2) ck throtle position sensor signal

My issue ended up being a fried DME ICV circuit...
