Head Help - Rebuild Cost - Oil Problem - Sigh can't drive the e30 :(

First the stories :) Then the questions!

Ok there is that pipe that runs across the top. Well my 1989 325i came with a BRAND new head with all new parts. 2 weeks ago I popped off the cover to check the valve adjustment because I am anal like that and I thought they were making too much noise. Learned later I have a "quiet" m20 :)

I noticed the threaded hole that oil feeds the little pipe at the BACK of the head was noticeably leaking and with no effort it would tighten a bit. It was not a horrible leak but it was leaking out the center so I assumed it just was not tight enough

So I tightened it a little bit and crack... a piece of the head cracked off :-(

SO, brand new head I am fucking kicking myself. So I figure it is a clean crack. I will JB weld it back on. That seemed to work fine so today I was changing plugs I noticed that the JB weld is holding fine... however it is OBVIOUSLY leaking MORE than before. I had not fully tightened it down before and it again was easy to turn. Like it was not tight.

    Here is the problem...

The part of the cam nearest the back of the head looks like it has been in an oven at 5000 degrees for 20 years it is BONE dry. the rest looks great
    really wet and lubed.

What do I do? This is a brand new head with ALL new parts... I am hoping my new cam and bearing is not fucked now :-(

I can assure you there is no blockage down inside the threaded hole because the tube squirts oil just somehow that last part of cam is not getting oil

I think I have a couple options here.

1 - Take off head and take it apartment and get the machine shop to weld that piece at the back and clean up the JB weld and fix it properly. It seems like the hole needs to be drilled deeper too for some reason :(

2 - Buy a known straight head with broken valves or whatever and transfer all my stuff over? This seems like the best option

3 - Get another known working head and transfer everything...

    Help?

What is cost to get this fixed if I go for option 1? How much are used heads? I don't think Pull A Part has any "i" heads :(

I'd pick up a bare head from somewhere, have the cam checked to make sure the bearing isn't shot.

Pull a part every once and a while has I heads but you have to time it right(I've gotten 2 there before $38 each :) )

I say the easiest option would be to remove the head and take it to a machine/welding shop complete and have them weld the broken part back on .

Even if you get a cheap head you will have to have it checked and decked and then you would want to swap over all the valves and seals and everything since it it new .

However if you decide to go the route of another head I have several available .
I have one that you would need to swap all the valvetrain over and I would sell it for cheap .

Yah I was thinking having them fix it would be the best way... however it seems like this head is not feeded the back of the camshaft oil :(

There should be 5 holes in that pipe that goes over the cam. Those 5 holes drip oil on the cam. Take the valve cover off, and disable the fuel/ignition system. Then short pins number 11 and 14 in the diagnostic plug. This should bump the starter over. While the engine spins you should see oil dripping out of that pipe. Make sure its dripping out of all the holes. You can either do that, or take the pipe off and make sure that last hole isn't plugged up or something. Honestly though, having a machine shop weld/check your new head would be cheaper than getting a NEW/used casting and swapping parts.

I think so. It couldnt be more than $200 for them to weld that broken part.

                  Yes

Now consider I have to take off the head

                  take apart the whole thing

                  Take it to the shop

                  Weld it

                  Pick it up

                  Put everything back together

100-200 in parts for head gasket kit/bolts etc

                  Sucks
