    "refreshing" a muffler

so i got a nice 2x2 inch rusty hole in the bottom of my muffler that's sitting in the basment waiting for me to install... luckilly it's a 3 wall 325i muffler so no big deal (yes i have the rest of the equip to do the conversion)... BUT

i wanna kinda freshen her up... make her look nice. patch up the hole, get rid of the rust, paint the whole can black & shine up the tips a little.

buddy of mine told me about some kinda paste that turns rust back into metal. any leads?

    suggestions?

I think I've heard of that stuff too, but i think I'd have to say BS to that...... :? (or, am I wrong? I'm not too sure on this...)

About freshening it up - I've been thinkin of doing the same thing. I wanted to paint the pipes coming from the headers all the way to the muffler a nice flat or satin type black (made for high temps of course) (cat and all), then maybe make the tips a silver or something.

    How bad is the rust?

pretty bad... i just kinda wanna stop it, fill it in w/ something that won't crack (maybe that paste stuff... my buddy used it years ago & said it was worth it) and cover it up / paint it

That would probably work. My muffler is rotted all teh way thru. Hell, I can break off part of the tip using my finger.

When I get the IS to part out, I'm gonna steal the muffler off of that.

I think painting it black would look pretty cool too, if someone manages to look under the car...

most of the stuff I've seen you brush on and it turns the rust into a primer that you can paint, I used it on my 85 318i but it didn't stop the rust to much and turned the paint around the little rust spots brown.

Yeah, new muffler. Hit up the local parts yard and pick a not-too-busted-up one, or order something nice off the internet and just clamp it on until you build a final setup.

So why not buy a Dynomax or something for like 50 bucks and not have an obnoxiously loud rusted up muffler?

Instead you'll have an obnoxiously loud brand-spanking-new muffler. ;)

it's not rusted out... it's in perfect working condition, just got some rust on the OUTSIDE.... i don't HAVE to, since it works FINE, but i kinda wanna freshen up to make it look PRETTY

are we clear on this gentlemen? 8)

btw... i paid Chapel 100 bucks for the muffler, as well as a few hours of his computer expertice. i COULD buy a new one, but that would cost me more time & alot more money, considering if i bought a new one i'd want to get myself a nice supersprint or something... something i do'nt wanna do, since i do'nt wanna mod my eta much. i'd rather save up for a sportbike or a 325/18iS or somethin

So w/ that said... what could i use to fill the holes, stop the rust & freshen her up?

I use Naval jelly on rust here at my house, and it works great. I'm sure you could use that, get the rust out, then fill in the hole with ome JB Weld and get it smooth, then just paint that... I use JB weld on my muffler and it holds up fine, just make sure you let it cure the reccomended amount of time, orelse you will be doing it again.

Pete, plasma cutter to cut out around the rust, and then tack weld a new piece of metal on.

$25 tops at any muffler shop

If the rust is not to bad you might try some steel wool. cuz on my old muffler there was some rust, but after I used steel wool it was rust free. But now I got a Magnaflow exaust with a single 3" dtm pipe out the back (painted black).
