Is Steering Rack supposed to leak from here?? *PIC*

my boot was torn and i lost half a quart of fluid onto my garage floor over the course of a day or two. Idk you let me know if this is supposed to happen, i'm going to get a new boot rai now. Appreciate the help

It was quite dirty in there so i hope that no seals got messed up or something i would hate to have to replace this rack!!! i want to spend the money on suspension!!

Chances are your rack is shot. Most e30 racks because of age leak. Get a faster rack rebuild it and drop it in. Or just keep adding atf.

The boots are simply to keep dirt away from the rack. A leak from the boot (or where it used to be) means that the rack seals are bad and that it is time for a new or rebuilt rack.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

to answer your general question, racks are never supposed to leak.

by faster you mean something with less lock-to-lock and rebuild that or is there a faster rack rebuild kit?! keep addin atf is not an option as my parent's driveway already has a BIG ASS stain from this stupid leak and they gonna bitch on end when they notice it

replacing the rack seems simple enough i'ma check out the diy section maybe there's info on this. ty u all!

Try using "Valvoline ATF with leak stop" It come in a redish-brown bottle. Get two bottels. Works like a charm.

i have regular valvoline atf, but yeah i should get some of that thick LUCAS stuff...questions IS, should i get the tranny (there's a better product i know X-tran) or the PS stuff??

i'm hold off on putting this boot and run the car (inside the garage :ugh:) and see if it does anything..meanwhile, any rebuild kit available?? i'll see if i can come up with an e36...****i saw one at a u-pull-it junkyard a month ago $37 so says their price list!

                        Get the E36 rack..

It's a better rack IMO and for the amount of work required to rebuild an old rack the time would be better spent on the swap.

jaja you specially are going to laugh...went to a junkyard an hour ago helping a friend get a tranny for his nissan 240 and found a rolled over e36 lofl!!

thing was that the engine was out and there was no subframe so i paniqued and cursed untill i peeked under the car next to it and voila i saw this:

3 and a bit turns lock-2-lock, checked boots and no leaks so i'ma happy camper!

$37+8core with tie rods with perfect boots...although i still have to read your DIY to see what the deal is...jaja thank you all for your help, if anyone wants my old rack shoot me a pm. $25 and its yours (w/ tie rods if i dont use them)
