    fuel gauge

i just bought a 89 325i and have been tuning it up for quite some time now. When i bought the car the odometer did not work anymore and the coolant gauge was erratic. So i went to the junkyard and pulled an instrument cluster and everything works except the fuel gauge. therefore i think the problem is in the cluster and not the fuel sender relay b/c i am pretty sure th gas guage worked on the old one. What do i need to fix/repair. Any help appreciated. thanks Matt

try swapping the fuel gauges out, swap the one from your old one to your new cluster

does the fuel level read erratically at all times, yet the warning light comes on when your almost out of gas?

if so, that is exactly what my car does and it fucking pisses me off!!!

Do you still have your old cluster? Your problem might have been as simple as needing new SI batteries.

If you want to keep the one you have, just get another fuel gauge and swap it out. I believe it is just held in place with a few screws, no special tools required.

The fuel gauge does not read at all. The needle is passed empty and the light is not on either. i have not put gas in it as it is still in my driveway not inspected and not insured.

Yes i still have my old cluster. Would you think i would need new SI batteries even though everything else works? thanks Matt

Mine too, I think it's a short on the sending unit, I call it the gas factory, I add 5 gallons, and all of a sudden it's full, ot half, or 3/4, well, it's life. ;)
