Randy 1. Muffler 0 - OR how to have a mean sounding Eta

So the last few weeks the car has been sounding particuarly loud. There's been a pretty harst drone at just below the throttle position for crusing on the highway. So, most of the time I'm ok. Well, two days ago I had some time and got down behind the car and checked things out.

Well, there was deffinalty a 4 inch gap between the muffler and the closest exhaust pipe after the cats/resonator. Rust had gotten the best of it. So, what else could I do with 0 money in my bank account? That's right...hacksaw the whole damn thing off. So, as for right now there's exhaust from the headers to where the beginning of the muffler heat sheild. Then open. I'll say this, there's still a drone because the waves bouncing from the tip of the pipe and between the car and the road. But when I open it WOT and take off it sounds like a medevil manx dog. It's mean.

Sure, it's a little loud. But it's not ricer annoying-loud (and certainly not illegally loud).

So, the next plan is to get a nice 'L' piece of piping, some sideskirts, some sheet metal and put a nice side exhaust on the Eta. (as well as do something about the old cat/resonators still on the car).

It may not be pretty (or amazingly fast), but it will sound mean

I did the same thing to my 85 318i the muffler ruseted off so I just cut the pipe. It sounds great, Then latter the rear section of pipe rusted off right past the cat flange, so then it was just the cat. Now I've got an eta muffler hanging on the rear of the car but I don't have the two flanges bolted together as they won't fit right without cutting and welding. That way it looks like there is a muffler but still sounds nice and mean, it will put any ricer to shame of there lawnmower exhuast.

man, i thought my current exhaust was ghetto ;)

the pipe completely rusted & let go right at the bottom of the downpipes at the rear of the Y joint where the downpipes go 2 into 1. currently i have a soup can.... yes, that's right, a soup can w/ the ends cut off hose clamped onto the pipes keeping them together... but it still leak pretty good & is loud as hell when i get on it, and even when i'm not on it

man, when that pipe let go completely i was just tearing onto the highway, so i was in 3rd gear just shy of 80 mph.... thing let go & i almost shat my pants... talk about loud.... Headers, 2 feet of downpipes, then NOTHING  20 minutes later stopped on the side of the highway i found myself underneath my car using a wire hanger i had in my trunk to keep the rest of the exhaust dragging. then i was saying "hello Officer, no i'm all set, just doing a little emergency roadside maintenance" ;)

        LOL

When we unbolted the exhaust off my old 325e it was so loud it set off car alarms a block over. I tried to pull that with my 325i but it was just loud not disgustinly aggressive like the E was. The exhaust notes were like the difference between a Supra and a Muscle car. One was loud and mean and the other was just downright scary.

Sweet dude, post some pics. I'd like to see more e30's with side exhausts. I've only seen an m3 with it done.
