Remove cluster and car no run?

Today i took out my instrument cluster to put in new gears and i had to drive it a few places. Well when i got home tonight it seemed like the battery was dieing. The lights got dimmer and dimmer then nothing at all then the car stalled. WTF. Is this related or do i need an alternator? Please help.

i drove around without an instrument cluster for a little while in one of my old e30s. so id say it might be something else.

I heard somewhere that if the battery charge light on some of the E30's didn't work, the alternator won't charge.

If this is true, it sounds like it's what your problem was.

Try charging your battery and seeing if that fixes it.

      Hope this helps.

it is because you removed the cluster.. toss it back in, and charge your battery and you'll be good.

That was only on pre-85 e30s.

*To me it sounds like the alternator.

Well it MUST have been the cluster. I went out there and put the cluster back in and started it up. Ran it at fast idle for 10min and shut it off. Then started it up again. Everything should be cool. Thanks

It's not just pre-85 cars. If you run any E30 with the cluster out then the charging system will disable itself because the warning light isn't there.

Thats an interestingly retarded way to wire a car. Glad i know that now.

The bypass resistor is still on the cluster circuit board. No cluster, no battery charge.
