    fuel pump problem?

my car has trouble starting latley. about a month ago, when i would start the car, it would just crank. than about 5 secs later i start it, it fires right up. so it has been doing this for the last month. now, this morning it would just crank, thats all it would do, wouldn't fire rite up. so i took another car and on my llunch break from work i went back home and tried it again. so it crank but wouldn't fire up. than after a couple tries it fired up. so i'm not takin a risk gettin stuck somewhere. you think its a fuel pump problem? o yea, um when u put the car on ON, should u hear the fuel pump turn on? i kno most cars u hear it. i don't hear it on mine. and also i don't have alot of gas but that shouldn't be the problem, its near empty but should still start. so is it a fuel pump or something else. thx

That could be a failed transfer pump (in the tank) or a failing high pressure pump. But then it could be any of an number of other problems. The fuel system can be tested (procedure is in the Bentley).
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
