    Shift Linkage parts

Hi, I just bought a 1984 318i last week...but the problem is that the shift linkage is in need of some serious repair. If anyone knows of any reliable sites that has a full kit with all the parts for a good price, I'd be very appreciated. Thanks.

Good luck! I ordered and had a shop replace everything that Pat@Bmaparts recommended for a rebuild and it still has a lot of play.

I just ordered two of 25 11 1 208 580 (shift tower mount) items and hopefully that will fix it, otherwise I am giving up on it.

yeah, most of the time there is still play.

you can go the uber serious route and machine aluminum inserts for the rubber parts. that gets rid of all of it, if you do it right.

but it increases wear on the linkage and shit. so in the end it might not be worth it.

Increases wear on what exact components ? Have you done this before (replace all the shifter components) ?

Well as an experiment when mr deagle and i swapped trannies we made the aluminum inserts for the horizontal shift linkage piece.

and though it was tight and had virtually no play, the shifter vibrated a lot.

and i imagine it would wear out the thing that holds the shifter (i am having ahuge brain fart) due to the vibrations.

but we took it off before we could experience the long term effects.

Hmm, but it won't vibrate when you clutch in so who cares...? I want my shifter to feel like a miata or s2k shifter... instead it hits the fricking console in reverse lol.

yeah for the most part it wont do hardly any damage, just didnt want to sound like a god or something cause it was perfect.

              so you should do it.

we machined the pieces on a lathe and then pressed them into linkage.

use some lube, cause metal to metal will squeak after a while.

Hmmm, I might take that into consideration. Thanks for the advice ^^
