Bad news after wheel bearing install...WTF?

So, I installed a wheel bearing on my passengers side front last night. Things went OK...The bearing was pretty hard to put on the stub axle but i got it on. It had a little play in it initally...but once i hit it with the impace it had no play at all. So, I drove it around the neighborhood when i was done - no noise, no steering wheel shimmy. This morning i get on the freeway to go to work and between 50 and 60 that wheel seems to be shaking like crazy. Past 60 it smoothes out. the bearing remains quiet - and i cant believe that the bearing is shot. Did I manage to destroy my tie rod end during this process? What do you guys think is going on?

are you sure its not a very out of balance wheel that hits its resonant frequency around 60mph?

I switched the wheel from the other side because it was showing some major abnormal tread wear. It wasn't shaking when it was on the other side. I'm going to do new tie rod ends tonight and put my spare wheel on. I'll get it aligned this weekend.

Did you press the bearing on on the race? Also, the bearing needs about 220 ft lbs of torque. Do you think your gun did that?

The gun says it hits at 250 ft lbs. I'll retorque it tonight. What do you mean press the bearing on on the race?

I dudnt use any special tools during the install - but like i said if i destroyed the bearing somehow wouldnt it be making some noise? I'll do the tie rod ends tonight....retorque everything and see wtf is going on. For good measure, I'll put another wheel on that side too.

When I did mine I just got a small piece of pipe to hit the bearing on. You really don't need special tools to do this.

Let us know what you find. Good luck.

Will do. I'll be pissed if the bearing is messed up.

my sister did the same thing with similar results. All her wheels were fit for scrap. No problems since.

it was the wheel/tire. Spare on - smooth as can be.
