Why does it need a new crankshaft, specifically?

"See, we're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anyone wanna see second prize? Second prize is a set of steak knives. Third prize is you're fired."

How much you are looking for in parts?

        Used 2.3l crank prob. $200-$300
        Piston rings?

I would question why in the hell it would need a crank and just rings. Rod bearings are probably in question. Did it have bottom end problems? Whats the asking price? Miles?

he said i could take it for $5,300. It has 98k miles. 3 owners. Clean carfax. One little dent on the right front fender. 19x9 breyton wheels (i know, TOO BIG). 3Rracing front seats. Silver color. Black interior.

Why have I seen this car before........

Since your told me the price, here are some side thoughts before you buy this.

Many E30 M3 owners are a believer of the 15k rule, buy a $5k M3 and expect to spend $10k to get it in a condition that is exceptable. That being said, I have bought a $6k M3 and a $9k M3. The $9k spun a rod bearing and was rebuild to a 2.5L. It is a 'race-car', and $13k went into the motor. The $6k M3 had a clean car fax, low miles (odometer was broken) and I knew some history of the car from Don McAdams, the car was bought from Pat P. The car runs perfect, did replace the rod bearings, intake gaskets, had the bolts retorque to spec, looked over the engine by a race mechanic, who knows S14s, and said it is well worth the money.

The E30 M3 (as you should know) is not the cheapest car when wanting parts, but there is enough people out there that will help you with questions and trying to get you the best parts at the best prices. It is up to you. No risk = no enjoyment / High risk = greater enjoyment, is the way I see it. The price is low for a car that is wanted and that has a racing history with many wins.

If it "needs" a crank, I bet it needs the rods looked at and maybe redone, then you might as well put in new pistons, bore the block and get a 2.5l kit.

My point is you are looking at a rebuild here. For a stock rebuild, you are looking in the $5K RANGE with parts and labor.

No M car is cheap, but the S14 is BMW's most expensive 4 banger ever!
