    Coolant Temperature Sensor Revisit HELP.

The temperature after the car warms up is low. Its in between the middle line and the one to the left of it, but much close to the line to the left of hte middle line.

NOW... the idle is running at 900 ish at this condition.
If I turn the car off, engine bay continues to heat up, when I crank the car again, it would be at the half way point.
At this moment the idle is 600. And you can barely even feel the car is idling. It seem like it should be like this.

I'm thinking my coolant temperature sensor is at fault.

But whats with the 71* 80* 85* all these numbers? are they celcius? the one from real oem say its a duel temp sensor with 91/99 what does that mean. I'm super confused with these numbers. How do I buy the one that will heat up my m20 to be in the middle of the temperature?, so my idle can come down?

The temperatures are celsius. Now there are two sensors that screw into the thermostat housing. One if for the temp gauge in the cluster. the other is the ecu sensor.

      which one is where?

which one is which? would you rec doing both at the same time? or jsut do one? if so which one should I test out first? And is 80 oem one?

... I just check real oem with the part number... which one si the one that is actually on the radiator? all these are for the divider valve.

I think you may be looking at the thermoswitches that are used for control of the aux fan.

Where the temp guage will settle under normal operation is a function of what thermostat is in use. The standard 80C thermostat will have the needle a bit to the right of 12 o'clock and in stop and go traffic the needle may just edge past the middle mark.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

If I were replacing one I'd do both brown and blue while I'm in there. They are cheap and if they are acting up it best to just go ahead and do it. As for the Tstat oem is 80 deg C. I've installed a 71 deg C in my 89 recently and it's running cooler, but I think my mileage is suffering because of it being too cold. I recommend staying witht he 80 deg C.

how often do these things fail?

how often do temperature sensor for the coolant fail? Just wondering. Its probably opening up too early. Would this have to do with the DME/DMU or is it just a sensor problem? Can it also be problem with throttle? Just want to replace the right thing.

can anyone verify which one it is? I think its the two sensor on this page.

The coolant temp sensor will be the blue one. The Thermo-Time Switch will be the brown one. You'll need the brown one #12-62-1-710-512. It tells the ecu the temp of the engine, and the ecu adjust fuel etc accordingly.

                thermostat?

what about the thermostat? can that be busted or is that unlikely?

It's possible. It's not unheard of for them to go bad.

                    sending you first

thanks alot for the help. I'm going to try the temperature sender first. Gonna go to the dealer and pick up one.

This is normal, all cars will "heat up" when they are turned off cuz the coolant stops flowing and the fan turns off, so it gets hotter.

                        yea

I figure as much, but its kinda of wierd how the temp sensor is reacting, according to the bentley the problems I have seem to be the temperture sending unit. I already got one, but havent fit it in yet.

Anyone know if, and when I take off the sensor will the coolant come out? do I need to refill? will there be air bubbles? or is it just screw of and screw back on?

Do it when the engine is cold, you shouldn't get any overflow like this. If you do it'll only be a very small amount. You will possibly need to bleed the system a bit. Yes screw the old one out new one back in. You may wanna use a little pipe tape or such just to make sure it doesn't leak.

                            did it

so I did it while the engine was half warm. Pull it out and no liquid came out. Put it back drove it around, didnt need to top it off or anything. No air bubble or over heating everything was good :)

It seem that I would need teh blue one too :(

Anyone know if the FAE sensor is just as good as bosch? or should I just stay with Bosch from teh dealer? cause its like 3 times the price.

I'll have to change the blue one to I think, cause the idle dropped to 950... sometimes 1000. So maybe one more sensor will do the trick. My ICV seem to be working fine with the Ohm test. The sensor however, seem to need replacing.

Anyone have experience with FAE sensor, or have suggestions? please help
