I run 235/40R17's on 8.5x17's all around on my e30. My wheels were also et30. I'm even using 10mm spacers up front and 8mm spacers in the rear and I have no rubbing at all. I have rolled inner fenders, race springs, and the higher rear arches. The thing is, even though I have the higher rear arches, I'm running the 8mm spacer in the rear and still have a good deal of space. I'll be running 265/35R17s on 9.5x17 (et30 or et25) out back in the next few months. WIth your later rear arches, with et30 and an 8.5x17, I really think you'd be fine with 235/40s. As long as you roll your inner fender lips, that gives a ton of extra space. What springs are you on?

I have GCs....I'm not sure what the rating is though. What spring set-up are you running?
