How far down do shocks "bottom out"?

    How far down do shocks "bottom out"?

    My passengers side front shock is bottoming out after like 3 inches of travel. i know i need new shocks - but is this right?

    the front is a strut to start with and if you are bottoming out and they are traveling that much they are worn out !! REPLACE them along with every other suspension part that has worn out from this problem. More than likely eveything needs it. Mine did and was in same shape when I bought the car

      The weird thing i replaces all the shocks struts on my other e30 and they were far softer than these - but never bottomed out. It's just weird.

        spirngs maybe be worn out or do you have the bump stops in ?

          I thought about the bunp stops - But have not looked. I'm thinking some vogtland springs and some KYBs for now.

            Usually a cracked oil pan is a good indication of excessive suspension travel.

            If its not hitting a bump stop, its possibly bent which also limits travel.
