My passengers side front shock is bottoming out after like 3 inches of travel. i know i need new shocks - but is this right?
How far down do shocks "bottom out"?

the front is a strut to start with and if you are bottoming out and they are traveling that much they are worn out !! REPLACE them along with every other suspension part that has worn out from this problem. More than likely eveything needs it. Mine did and was in same shape when I bought the car -
The weird thing i replaces all the shocks struts on my other e30 and they were far softer than these - but never bottomed out. It's just weird."We praise or find fault, depending on which of the two provides more opportunity for our powers of judgement to shine."Comment

Usually a cracked oil pan is a good indication of excessive suspension travel.
If its not hitting a bump stop, its possibly bent which also limits travel.
