How to shorten an OEM shift lever?

I see a photo in the short shifter thread that shows an OEM shift lever that has been shortened by 1" or so. I've asked and nobody seems to have info on how best to do this.

Does anyone know how this was done? Was the fat lever part pulled off of the lever ball rod and cut or was the whole thing cut and then put back together?

      Good site.
      Long story short:

Heat up the shift lever till the rubber loosens, pull out base lever.
Trim off excess base rod and corresponding lever casing and then reinstall.

Cool, I'll have to try this soon.
