I put a vise grip on the water pump pulley and braced it against the block and stood on top the motor and pressed down on the wrench with my leg. This was on my turbo car when I was changing the HG. I have done several other cars and none have been that hard.

Possibly a couple dumb questions, but
1: are all the belts still in place?
2: is it just the nut spinning, or are the pulleys spinning also? In other words, does the nut appear to be stripped?

When I did a fan clutch on my 92 325 cabrio, one person was on the fan clutch spanner and another was putting extra tension on the alternator/water pump belt by pressing down on it with a wrench handle. The belt obviously needs to be in place to do it this way. Worked like a charm though.

lol are you guys aware that it is reverse thread, and that you have to turn it the opposite way of what you would normally turn a bolt? if you are aware of this, and you still cant get it off, this is what i did.

take a monkey wrench, the ones that compress and get tighter under pressure. now put that on the black thing behind the fan, with the handle (if you are looking at the front of the car) to the left, so that it rests on the frame rail of the car. then stand on the right side and use a 32mm wrench and lift up to break it free.

Mine came off w/o too much trouble, I was actually surprised.

Now the cam seal guide cover, fuck that bitch, it just sheared in half on me when I started tapping it out.
                Keep on Keepin' on.

They can be a huge PITA. I only got mine off when I bought a genuine 32mm wrench, wailed on it with a rubber mallet and had a friend help hold the pully still.

                    fuck the fan clutch +1

after trying a screw driver to hold the pulley still, it kept spinning, so i went out and bought a vice grip wrench 7" and wedged that between the pulley and block. finally got the pulley to stop spinning but now the damn friggen fraggamatastic 32mm nut, wont come off! it just wants to strippp tease on me.

im getting a fucking torch tomorrow and sunburning the shit out of that nut to get it off...

man that sucks try a can of pb blaster before you take a torch to it. the fan came off pretty easy on my 318 i jammed a long screwdriver in the fan clutch(long enough to wedge itself against somthing) and put a pipe on the wrench and voila
                      Getting there

Get the lower temp fan switch from the e36 318i (m42 powered). Change that one with your switch, and move the wires on the connector so it comes on high speed when the switch switches on the low speed. Keep the stock aux fan and youll be fine.

                              Will
