here's some new stats... did a vacuum test and compression test tonight (finally got a T fitting i'd been looking for).

Before I continue, much of the drivability problems had vanished today, presumably after getting rid of much of the bad fuel. Nonetheless,

Compression came out much better than I had expected. Tested with 5 cranks per the Bentley manual, we saw 165 psi across the board, with no more than 1psi variance... except for cyl 3 higher by a 3-4 psi. Those numbers seem too good to be true, especially on a 223k engine, but we retested each cylinder 3 times, same results. Also, this was a dry test - no oil squirted in to test for bad rings.

The vacuum test was interesting. The bentley shows 15-22 inHg and steady at idle is normal- i found about 14" and lightly floating. Looks like a manifold or TB gasket is in order, since all other intake leak points are fixed (even the injector orings are recent)

still can't believe those compression test numbers.

also replaced the cheapie temporary champion plugs with bosch supers, and it runs significantly better today. I will do another vac test as idle isn't fluctuating at all.

how did you do the vaccum test, did you put a vac pump on where the fpr connects or what??

not a vac pump, but an actual vacuum gauge. a friend of mine had one (not the kind you install in the car, but a larger shop-style one just for this purpose).

I used some extra hose and a T-fitting into the FPR line.

I'm still kinda floored with those compression numbers though...
