So to check the reference and speed sensors, you see how strong they are magnetically?

I'll check that, and the temp switch also. I'll get this thing in the ass

Scabzzzz. Thanks for the very informative updates throughout the whole process. Big help.

I dont think its a sure fire way to check, but its something I noticed on accident.

The problem still exists for me once every month or two. Kind of weird. Ever since I replaced all of the sensors I could find, my car has been pretty flawless. Havent spent a dime on it in like 3 months. Other than being a wheel whore.

After reading all of this thread I'm not sure what's going on with my car.

I have a similar problem whit my 85 325e. It starts right up, but spikes up to around 3500rpm and holds for 8-10 seconds. It than drops down to below 500 rpm and sometimes dies. after a bit of playing with the throttle I can get it to stay on, but it will surge from 800-2000rpm until it's warm. Usually it runs smoothly after it warms up, but sometimes it starts back with the surging.

As of now I have cleaned the ICV, replaced the AFM and coolant temp sensor. My chilton manual is useless in the help department.
