Don't I need some kind of special tools to remove a Sony headunit? some kind of little grab handles or something?

      Update

Ok, so I'm still kind of stumped here. i pulled the cluster, and this is what I found:

Obviously something really bad happened, but the car was switched off while it did. The OBC still has a blank display, though it is getting power because the backlight is on. There are just no numbers coming up. After studying the wiring diagram in the Bentley, it looks like the OBC gets a fair amount of info from the cluster. Perhaps that's why it's not displaying anything?

The door locks and dome light trigger are still broken too. I disconnected the power to the power lock solenoid, but the cylinder will still not turn. Perhaps it got damaged somehow? but these 2 things seem very unrelated to the cluster/OBC. In fact, I could find no signs of burnt wires/bad relays or anything else when I checked behind the driver's kick panel. Everything looks great.

I'm not that good with electronics, someone help me out!

Wow, that's crazy! I wonder if the fried cluster is the problem, or if it's the result of another problem. Can you tell where that particular part of the circuit board goes? If you can find out, it would be worthwhile to check that circuit. Did the harness look okay? How about the pins in the connector and on the cluster? Was the cluster acting unusual at all before this happened?

I would try to find a used cluster and throw it in there. See what happens with the OBC.

The lock cylinder problem sounds mechanical and unrelated. I think.

OT: I have some cabrio sport seats that will be up for sale this weekend, hopefully. Tan. Really nice. :)

I could not see any signs of damage, shorts or burning on the wiring harness, connectors, pins or any other part of the board. Every other gauge and light on the board still works perfectly. And the board never gave any signs of going out before, *poof* it did.

I will get a new cylinder and solenoid tomorrow hopefully, if Joe ever calls me back :)

              while waiting

Check the rubber boot in the door jam. It has a lot of wires
running from the door into the cab, something may be shorting
causing the locking unit to function incorrectly.
Recently was reading this article which points out a double
lock feature I never knew of, could be engadged.

Acquire a fire extinguisher after it's all said and done.

This is for the door stuff, not the cluster problems.

had a similar experience, the obc harness was the culprit in my case, behind the radio the po had wired many years back... I believe the radio had been rubbing on it since most of the harnesses behind my dash were not strapped into their straps and such.
worth pulling the radio in any case to get more information. maybe you can see something back there without pulling the dash.
