Engine will not rev past 5k RPM

The other day I had to pass a slow car and when I floored the accelerator it felt like the tranny slipped and the car barely accelerated. While this was happenning the RPM needle fluttered right before 5k and stayed there. I let off and figured my auto tranny (with over 200k miles) was starting to go.

I have purposely replicated the problem from a stand still and during moment and the engine reacts the same way each and every time. However, I now feel the problem is not with the tranny. It feels like I am bouncing off a rev limiter.

I haven't looked into the problem yet but I am either thinking the AFM or the crank sensor is at fault. The engine runs like a champ otherwise and does not hesitate, miss or idle rough. The CEL is not on.

Has anyone experienced this problem? TIA

    Interesting.. sounds ignition related..

inspect your distributor and cap for scorns, and look into replacing your ignition coil or see if you can swap out with someone. wouldnt doubt it may have something to do with your DME as well.

hard to tell with your description and without seeing it

Hmmm...ok. Very possible. Could the coil be at fault? Cap/Rotor/Plugs/Wires are too new to be the problem.

dont forget to ck the little wiping surfaces inside the AFM electornics box (underneath the black cover) those wear out and you get a rev limiter type effect. Do a search here for missfire or sluggish and there is a anrticle on it.
