New 318is need a little help to make perfect!!

    Hey guys,
Thanks for all the guys that help with my smog issue in the pass week. :) Now my new car has two small problems, but its kinda of annoying.

First problem: The engine is a little loud and has a ticking sound, like a m20 that needs a value adjustment. Just soft ticking sound at idle, and as i rev higher through the rpms, the ticking gets louder, (starts to be really notice able after 3k rpm). From reading past threads, it's the chain tensioner. So is it? Also is there other stuff i could change or do to the engine to lower the noise from the engine? it's louder then my m20.

Second Problem: The car has a loud HISSSS noise from the rear. Sounds like something losing air. From my knowledge its probably the fuel pump, or maybe a clogged fuel filter forcing pressure on the fuel pump. So what do you guys think? This HISSSSS noise is really annoying.

Thanks again guys, just a side note*
i'm really happy with the new 318is, i have to say the car handles really well in stock form. I was driving a lowered, swayed, strut bar-ed 325i and i still think the 318is is more fun to drive, and handles better.

    # 1 I don't know if it's the same with m42's, but in M20 the injectors are loud. Higher rev's, engine needs more fuel, more ticking.

#2 The hissing you hear is probably some kind of exhaust leak. Maybe a gasket is blown out between the cat and the rear section.

There is an error that I have found with the wiring of 2 M42iS's sound systems where the speaker wire comes too close to the ECU and there's interference on the rear channels. This could be the hiss you are hearing.

As far as the Injector's, the M20 in my old (Sean's) Super-Eta are definitely louder than those in the M42iS, along with the normal valve click that is present with the M20, and not the M42. I dunno if you have access to an M20 (eta or otherwise), but if you do please do a comparoson between the i/eta and the M42.
My mountains are better than yours.

What will the compression test show? Are you thinking that my engine is loud because it's losing compression? I'll have a mechanic do a compression test, but i'm curious what will i find with the results because i never learned about doing compression test and the reasons for doing a compression test.

try changing to a heavier weight oil, that should quiet down the motor a bit.

Yep, I run Mobil1 15W50 in my M42, it keeps things rather quiet.

You might could try running some Seafoam through the various parts of the engine to loosen up any stuck parts, clear out the gunk/carbon, etc. I found that made my engine run better, quieter, and more efficiently.

                i run 20w50 also.

Well i tried sea foam to clean the engine yesterday because i hear from poeple it could be the tappets. And now the ticking noise is all gone.

Also the Hizz sound was the fuel pump. i guess the previous owner brought the car into a shop that jacked the car up on the wrong stop and make a huge dent in the fuel tank, the tank was pushing against the pump and was putting stress on it, so it made the hizzz noise, i took the pump out and banged out the dent. It's better now, but the hizz noise is still there b/c the pump is probably damaged now.

What did you "bang" out the dent with? Nothing metal, I hope.

If it's still making that noise then you definately need to get it fixed NOW. Don't put it off or you are going to get in your car and try to start it up and you will be stranded. They make that exact noise you have described right before they go out.
