    adjusting valves on m20, when?

just wondering how or when you know to adjust the valves on this engine? I'm looking at a out of state car with 80k. AFAIK the timing belts been replaced at 60k by a reputable BMW shop. Do people usually adjust the valves at the same time? Also since I haven't seen this car in person yet, I was wondering what to look out for and what kind of Q's to ask mechanically. Thanks.

    Dave.

I've heard that the valve train will begin to show wear as early as 50,000 miles. Its recommended that they be adjusted about every 15,000 miles. Its easy to do, and you can usually hear the valves ticking when its time. It will be a noticeable ticking sound from the head.

I'd be careful about rust. Check the floor panels for any dampness, the battery area in the trunk, and the strut towers. Ask for a compression check if they're willing to perform one. This should give you a good idea of engine internals. If you're familiar with the smell of burnt coolant, take a wiff of the exhaust to see if the head is leaking or cracked. Oil leaks will likely be found around the head and front timing covers if they're bad. Also look underneath for signs of tranny leakage (rear seal especially).

When you drive it, listen closely to the tranny for whining. If you hear any, drop into neutral while moving and if it goes away, it could be a sign of a bad tranny component. If it doesn't, it could be a number of bearing related problems (wheel, differential, drive shaft, etc). Good luck.
