It isn't unkown for a fuel pump on an older BMW to not work correctly after the car is run to empty. That can be as a result of overheating the pump or it can be the result of sediment being stirred up and sucked into the pump. Since the sediment is usually mostly rust and fairly abrasive it can take out a pump that's on its last legs. You really need to run the fuel pressure and delivery tests.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
