    Strange rear end noises...

I just got a new exhaust today for my 1991 318is. Since then I have noticed a strange thumping noise when turning right at speeds over 30mph. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers side rear end. I thought it was the exhaust bumping around. When I got home I saw the tip touching the rear bumper so I bent the hanger on the muffler so it sat right in the middle of the opening. I thought that fixed it until later when I went around a corner the strange thumping continued. Is it a wheel bearing that went south or a heat shield rubbing somewhere? Any advice?

The exhaust is a custom bent 2.5" from the headers back including high flow cat

Maybe one of the bends is hitting something. Get the car in the air and check it out. Move the exhaust around and listen for clunks.

      Exhaust noises:

You already fixed area one: Tip at the valence.

      Check out the following:
      >>Clearance where exhaust tube passes under rear subframe

      >>Check muffler side to side clearnce in the back. Could be that its bumping against the spare tire well.

Heatshields are typicllay a medium pitched metallic rattle.

Bad shock mount can cause rear end clunking. Heres an easy check - jack up that side of the car (leave wheel on). When the car is up, look at the area between the top of the shock and below the shock mount. If the gap is very small 1/16th" - max 2/16th" , the the mount is ok. If the gap is blatantly huge (>2/16th"), then the shock mount is bad.

      Check your sway bar mounts.
