E30 Fuel Filler Rubber Neck Piece Thingy

I have recently noticed that when it rains outside water collects under the battery in the little compartment. Every time i make sure to dry it out, and i think i might know the cause of the problem. The rubber piece that fits around the metal part where you put in gas seems to be ripped. Is it possible to replace this? If so what is this part called, and where can i find it? If not, how should i go about fixing it?

    Thanks

Not sure what it's called, but you could probably get by with some silicone sealant in the mean time.

Talk to your stealership's parts dept. or any mail order and they can find it for you.

It's called a Rubber Cover, part 51711884358. The dealer should have it for around $15. Most likely they'll have to order it for you.

Kind of old message, but i have since began to fix the small little problems on my car, and before i go and buy this part from Pelican Parts, i was wondering a few things first.

Has anyone ever replaced this piece before and was it easy or difficult?
Could someone possibly explain to me how to replace this part?
Is there any other possible location for water to come in, other then the trunk seal(which would cause water to splash in my trunk and not collect neatly in the compartment under my battery)?

        Thanks again.

Pretty much the easiest thing to do. Clean out any remaining sand and crap inside the rubber boot, remove the gas cap and put a rag down there to block any additional dirt from getting inside the filler neck.

Pull the boot out, then put the new one back in. You may find lubing it with Windex or something like Armor-all will make it go in easier.

However, the water in the trunk is more likely to be caused by a leaking taillight gasket. In order to replace the taillight gasket, you have to remove the lamp assembly. This is actually pretty easy. There are six 8mm nuts that hold it to the tail panel. Just remove these and pull the light out, replace the gasket, then reinstall the taillight.
