    Fan Clutch Install Question

    Hi Gruppe
Just got a new fan clutch today. I recently got the car not too long ago...car is getting hot when sitting in traffic...so i suspected the fan clutch and normal driving temps is below half.
After looking at the tight compartment....what's the best/easiest way to remove the fan clutch and install the new one? What size wrench do i need?

    Thanks a bunch

I read on davelengths site that a bycicle rachet is a good alternative to a bmw tool.

i see a few hoses in my way....from the passenger side looks really hard and on the driver side...looks like there's a hose in the way...so which is the best approach?

drain coolant from bottom of rad, unhook all the rad hoses, some don't need to go but it makes it much easier, disconnect the fan shroud, unbolt the rad, pull the rad out take off the shroud, get a large pipe wrench, if your clutch fan is a single bolt- it's left hand thread.

        check out www.bmwe30.net
there's a pretty good write up on this there
thats all i could think of off the top of my head been almost a year since i did mine.

        Good Luck

You dont need to drain the coolant. You can pull it out, or even drop it out the bottom where theres nothing there. All you need is a skinny 32mm wrench to get the nut off. It's reverse threaded too.

What year and model E30 is it?

I was able to remove the fan assembly from below and drop it out the bottom without draining or removing the radiator or anything else. It's a 15 minute job from start to finish.

A good tool for the left-thread fan securing nut is a 32 Park #HCW-12 Headset wrench available at your local bicycle shop. The hooked end is good for tightening the front strut gland nut without having to remove the strut from the car :-)

Assuming it's an M20, just detach the fan shroud. Use a 32mm wrench like Randy said and just remove the shroud and fan together. I was able to use a regular 32mm open end wrench and not a special one. It was a tight squeeze, but it fit. Pretty easy job really.

haha...took me 15 minutes for the install....a little easier than i thought.
I borrowed a friend's narrow 32mm wrench, removed the shroud and pulled it off.
It was a little tricky getting the clutch treaded back but it works...and the car runs cool.

                Thanks u all...
